The SEI is one of only 10 federally funded research and development centers (FFRDCs) sponsored by the Department of Defense. Based at Carnegie Mellon University, an organization that is well known for its highly rated programs in computer science and engineering, the SEI operates at the leading edge of technical innovation. The SEI staff advances software engineering principles & practices and is a national resource in software engineering, computer security, and process improvement. Part of the SEI, the CERT Program has been a leader in cybersecurity for more than 20 years. Originally focused on incident response, CERT staff members now also work on network situational awareness, malicious code analysis, secure coding, resilience management, insider threat, digital investigations and intelligence, and workforce development.
