Boeing Defense Space & Security has an exciting opportunity for an Lead Airframe Design Engineer for the MQ-25 Fuselage to join us as part of our MQ-25 team located in Hazelwood, MO.

The MQ-25 is a new autonomous, unmanned carrier based refueling air vehicle. The MQ-25 program is working the Engineering and Manufacturing Development of 7 flight vehicles and two full-scale test articles for the Navy. The Airframe team is responsible for the design definition and structural analysis of the major structural components of the vehicle. The MQ-25 design includes metallic substructure components, carbon fiber reinforced skins, and uses advanced assembly techniques for its state-of-the-art build.

Design engineers support the build by incorporating required design changes into the design definition, and preparing changes required for the upcoming production contracts. Design engineers must work to incorporate all the requirements from multiple other engineering disciplines into the 3D model. The MQ-25 uses a model based design engineering release process, and product data management tools. This is an excellent opportunity to experience the first vehicle production and testing process on a new franchise platform.

This position will lead a team of designers assigned to the fuselage to support design changes and improvements. The position will be responsible for coordination of all design changes for the rest of the current contract and preparing for the next production contract.

Position Responsibilities

  • Provides oversight and direction to develop, integrate and document structural and interior payload system requirements to establish the system design.
  • Leads development, maintenance and modification of structural and interior payload system and component designs, using 3-D Computer Aided Design tools and/or other design methods, to provide product definition to other engineering groups, production operations, suppliers and external customers throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Leads performance, integration and analysis of tests to validate and verify systems and components meet requirements and specifications.
  • Manages supplier development, test and production activities and coordinates with the supplier to optimize the design and achieve program goals.
  • Develops new design/analysis processes and tools to improve the effectiveness, quality and efficiency of the development effort.
  • Investigates emerging technologies to develop concepts for future product designs to meet projected requirements.
  • Works under consultative direction.

Hybrid schedule (in office Tuesday and Wednesday) and virtual work allowed Monday, Thursday, and Fridays if program needs can still be met.

Travel may be required up to 10% of the time; Domestically and/or Internationally depending on business needs

The position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. “US Person” includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience)

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics or physics
  • 14+ years’ experience in Computer Aided Design (CAD), utilizing model-based definition, preferably on Unigraphics

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience)

  • Experience leading a design or analysis team
  • Experience with aircraft system or structures design, development and production
  • Experience with Product Data Management tools/systems such as TeamCenter and ENOVIA
  • Experience working with computer aided design such as CATIA, Solidworks, or Siemens NX

Typical Education/Experience

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 14 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+9 years' related work experience, Master+12 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
