Boeing Laser and Electro-Optical Systems (LEOS) in Albuquerque, New Mexico is looking for highly skilled and adaptable Lead Mechanical Design Engineer to perform design, analysis and test of precision electro-optical systems. Engineer would work as part of a multi-disciplinary team supporting the development of both directed energy and electro-optical systems.

The Lead Mechanical Design Engineer position (Level 4) supports the development and documentation of mechanical and fluid system and thermal environment requirements to establish the system design. This position supports system components' designs/proposals standards to provide installation and detail documentation. Ideal candidates will support the development, maintenance or modification of system, component and installation designs/proposals to provide design documentation to downstream groups. Candidate will perform and analyze documents to validate and verify systems and components to meet requirements and specifications. Supplier development, test and production activities and directs the supplier to optimize integration and achieve program are among daily goals.  This position is located in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Directs the development and documentation of large scale, complex mechanical and fluid system and thermal environment requirements to establish the system design.
  • Develops new design/analysis processes and tools to improve effectiveness, quality and efficiency of the development effort.
  • Directs emerging technologies to develop concepts for future product designs to meet projected requirements.
  • Consults for disposition, corrective actions and coordination with cross-functional groups to identify/implement solutions and drive strategic improvements relative to production processes.
  • Coaches and mentors others.
  • Works under consultative direction.

This position allows telecommuting. (Hybrid) The selected candidate will be required to perform MOST work onsite at one of the listed location options. (Albuquerque, NM) 

This position requires an active U.S. Top Secret Security Clearance (U.S. Citizenship Required). (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active)

Basic Qualifications (Required Skill/Experience):

  • 5+ years of experience with mechanical component and assembly level design.
  • 5+ years of experience with integrated mechanical design function including the application on finite element analysis (FEA) for mechanical design. 

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Experience with electro-optic systems.
  • Experience with mechanical and system integration.
  • Experiences assisting with Finite Element Analysis efforts with an emphasis in structural dynamics or thermal analysis.
  • Experience with Solid Works, NX, FEMAP, Teamcenter or Windchill, and industry standard CAD and FEA tools.

Typical Education/Experience:

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+4 years' related work experience, Master+7 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
