The Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) team is seeking an Expert Sensor System Architect (level 6) to join the team in El Segundo, CA.

As an Expert Sensor System Architect, you will design and develop state-of-the-art, space-based communication systems for commercial, civil and/or national security programs. You will actively drive a highly-motivated team that works with domestic or international customers on their latest satellite systems.

Project assignments typically span the unit life cycle, from internal trades, concept studies and system definition, to satellite unit development and test. Candidates will belong to or lead a systems engineering team interacting with customers, suppliers, program management, integration and test engineers, and senior technologists.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Oversees employees performing engineering and technical activities in the area of Systems Engineering.

  • Develops and executes integrated departmental plans, policies and procedures and provides input on departmental business and technical strategies, goals, objectives.

  • Acquires resources for department activities, provides technical management of suppliers and leads process improvements.

  • Develops and maintains relationships and partnerships with customers, stakeholders, peers, and partners.

  • Provides oversight and approval of technical approaches, products and processes.

  • Mentors, develops, and motivates employees.

  • Primary Engineering responsibilities include the following for both commercial and government programs: Architecture trades, performance analysis, requirements flow down, functional decomposition, and conceptual design of complex sensor and communications solutions that will be implemented in spaced based payload applications. 

  • Will be working with other Systems Engineering and HW organizations to optimize processes across organizations to reduce cycle time and improve first pass quality.

  • Serve as domain expertise for Payload Architectures on the various program developments.

  • Support new business development activities.

  • Collaborate with cross functional Systems Engineering and HW departments to drive process improvements.

  • Development of Payload Architects through mentoring and coaching of engineers with experience ranging from new hires to people with greater than 30 years of experience.

  • IRT member to support major reviews on programs and IR&D developments

This position is expected to be 100% onsite.  The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at the listed location.

This position requires a current Tier 5 (T5), formerly known as a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) (U.S. Citizenship required) or requires candidate agreed to enter a Continuous Evaluation program.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor's, Master's or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, or physics

  • 15+ years of systems engineering experience

  • 15+ years of experience evaluating satellite system architectures and payload technologies for integration on to satellites

  • 10+ years of experience with digital payload design, analysis, development, and verification

  • 10+ years of experience in Digital Signal Processing or Digital Communications

  • 10+ years of technical leadership

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Masters’ Degree in Electrical Engineering

  • Experience in leading a team of engineers, suppliers, and support personnel in the technical design, development, integration, and test of a large scale complex mechanical and fluid system test facility

  • Demonstrated leadership for driving issue resolution and mitigating technical risk

  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink and C++

  • Experience with digital/RF communications hardware and lab equipment

  • Experience working with product/component developers and vendors who provide critical functionality to the overall system

Typical Education/Experience:

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 20 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+15 years' related work experience, Master+18 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
