The Boeing Company is looking for a Lead Systems Engineer for the F/A-18 Air Vehicle Training Systems and T-45 programs coordinating with Program Management, Training Systems Chief engineer, Project Engineers, Architects, Engineering management, engineering leads, etc.  Boeing Training Systems, located in St. Louis, MO, is seeking a Systems Engineer to lead a team working in a highly dynamic environment supporting the F/A-18 Training Program. The F/A-18 trainers utilize a distributed computer system operating in a secure environment providing realistic flying simulation for USN and international aircrew. Directly responsible and accountable to the F/A-18 Program Manager and have an independent reporting path through the VP of engineering for technical excellence and integrity of product design, development, production, supportability and mission success.  The Lead Systems Engineer shall support and be responsible with the Program Managers in meeting program cost and schedule baselines, design-to-cost targets and program cost reduction initiatives, while ensuring the safety and technical excellence and integrity of the product is maintained.  The selected candidate will be an experienced engineer with background in product development, customer relations, engineering processes, supplier management and integration. 

Position Responsibilities:

  • Provide senior technical and project engineering leadership for the program and associated proposals and be the senior technical interface to customers and suppliers
  • Establish a culture of proactive technical oversight, risk management and rapid issue resolution, providing alternative paths for issue resolution and opening dialogue on technical issues
  • Regularly assess the baseline program technical execution plan against technology, complexity and risk adjusted benchmarks of similar engineering efforts, and must advise the program manager and indirect reporting paths if the baseline plan's scope, tasks, inherent processes, resources, deliverables, and/or risks are inconsistent with those benchmarks
  • Responsible for preventing traveled technical risk and ensuring that technical risks/issues are driven rapidly to closure
  • Implement and enforce engineering functional excellence in people, processes, tools, and practices; drive productivity improvements through the use of the Lean+ disciplines; and share Best Practices and Lessons Learned
  • Work with functional counterparts to understand and ensure process inputs and outputs are clearly defined to enable products and services to meet requirements and delivered on schedule and within costs. Key processes include: gated reviews, Executability reviews, commitment letter reviews on new business opportunities, engineering program engagement points, and deep dives to look at predictive metrics and/or leading indicators of performance
  • Uses the structured requirements process to ensure requirements are clear, unambiguous verifiable and affordable.
  • Directs various analyses to optimize total system of systems and/or system architecture.
  • Directs analyses for affordability, maintainability, testability, integration, certification, product assurance and other specialties quality factors into a preferred configuration to ensure mission success.

This is a hybrid position that allows some telecommuting. The selected candidate will be required to perform some work onsite at one of the listed location options.

This position requires an active Secret U.S. Security Clearance. (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active.)

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry
  • Experience using or applying metrics to measure performance against projects to ensure high quality delivery
  • Experience negotiating pricing and contract terms and conditions
  • Experience with Supply Chain/Procurement
  • Experience with EVM
  • Ability to travel 10% of the time

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Experience in the field of simulation, particularly aircrew (flight) simulators and/or trainers
  • F/A-18 Experience
  • Experience with SAFE Agile processes

Typical Education/ Experience:

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+4 years' related work experience, Master+7 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
