The Boeing Company is hiring Equipment & Tool Engineer (Level 3) Tool Designers to support the Mobility and Surveillance Tool Engineering team located in Tukwila, WA. The team supports multiple BDS military derivative programs, including VC-25B, P-8 Poseidon, KC-46 Tanker, and AWACS, as well as unique special projects throughout the company due to their specialized skills  This specific opening is in our Computer Aided Measurement Systems (CAMS) Three Dimensional Metrology (3DM) sub-team. This small, cutting edge team uses advanced optical measurement systems to analyze, locate, and/ or align tight tolerance or widely separated aircraft features. The qualified candidate’s main area of focus will be development of automated digital tools to enable the factory to efficiently and accurately position and analyze aircraft assemblies.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Tool design, process improvement, support of tool fabrication, support to aircraft issues, and proactive engagement with the factory on a daily basis to solve issues and collect improvement ideas.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills are highly desirable.
  • Position requires a mechanical and spatial aptitude, and strong understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Evaluates program and project requirements, develops complex equipment and tooling concepts and designs solutions for the Production System.
  • Compiles and analyzes technical data to determine the effects on product engineering design and rate estimates, identifies robotics, automation or technology recommendations and system integration for equipment and tooling.
  • Ensures compliance with safety, producibility, maintainability, reliability, ergonomic factors and regulatory requirements.
  • Validates contractual performance milestones, maintains configuration control, conducts reviews, prepares plans for productions readiness, preventative maintenance, and spares.
  • Conducts training for Production and Maintenance personnel.
  • Develops and implements work-arounds and maintains configuration of hardware, software and documentation.
  • Performs studies and make recommendation for disposition of assets.
  • Provides technical expertise for measurement metrology hardware and software usage
  • Make recommendations and assist implementation with engineering, manufacturing, and quality inspection organizations for utilizing laser trackers, optical laser scanners, Coordinate Measurement Machines, structured light scanners, portable measurement arm, photogrammetry, GD&T alignment to aircraft structures, precision measuring instruments and methods
  • Assist with interpretation and analysis of inspection data
  • Work closely with Engineering and manufacturing, and provide inspection reports
  • Develop special tooling solutions such as target adapters, and specialized holding equipment to enable capturing CAMS/3DM aircraft data
  • Design traditional tooling solutions to support aircraft build

This position is expected to be the majority onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite based on factory and customer needs.

This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship. (An interim and/or final U.S. Secret Clearance Post-Start is required.)

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Portable Metrology experience in a production/factory environment
  • Experience in the application of GD&T principles
  • Experience designing, testing and automating processes with software code.
  • Any coding language is acceptable, though experience with Visual Basic, HTML, and Spatial Analyzer .mp
  • Experience with contact and non-contact measurement systems
  • Working knowledge of 3D design systems, such as CATIA V5 or Solidworks
  • Experience with Spatial Analyzer (preferred), Verisurf, Polyworks, or PC-DMIS metrology software
  • Experience designing tooling for a production system
  • Demonstrable aptitude for 3D spatial visualization is critical for success in this position.

Typical Education/Experience: 
Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. Master). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
