The Boeing Company is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for Space Launch System (SLS) Ground Systems and Integration (GS&I) Development located in Huntsville, Alabama

The focus of GS&I is to provide the equipment and software to allow the flight hardware to be qualified and for the assembled rocket elements to be acceptance tested at the factory.

This position's focus is on the development, integration and test, and includes requirements derivation, test verification and validation of the Electrical Ground Support Equipment (EGSE) Software, and the Michoud Assembly Facility (MAF) Test Flight Computer (MTFC) Software or the SLS ground and flight software (FSW).  

The candidate will work among a diverse team of engineering within GS&I to include Mechanical and Electrical Hardware, Models and Simulation engineers, computer technology technicians, IS Administrators, Software engineers, and technical analysts. When supporting NASA,  the team will also include Boeing and other NASA Suppliers as team members.

This position has many diversification opportunities with the ability to support the 3 teams and the Avionics Integration Lab. The person will support the leadership to plan, track, and report on status of the work, providing the opportunity of senior management visibility. The person will work with stakeholders and team supporting many of the following: derive test requirements, requirements implementation via code development, verification objectives,  assess permutations (nominal and off-nominal),  develop test scripts, develop test automation/process enhancements for the software products.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Lead code development/updates (C++ on Linux and or Windows base OS, using 1553/422/ethernet comms/protocol) for assigned features/capabilities, and may lead the code development or testing, and support: verification traceability, test report development, anomaly resolutions, validation of software and models

  • Conduct planning and perform project management tasks to provide visibility of task performance with weekly reporting

  • May conduct program independent reviews and reports results to program leadership.

  • Provide critical support of  software over the entire product lifecycle, to include reach back support for troubleshooting/anomaly resolution of deployed software (examples of support may include System Integration Test Facility - Qualification (SITF-Q), System Integration Lab (SIL), and or MAF Acceptance Testing (AT))

  • Propose technology advances for potential application to program and or company business needs. .

  • Support/Maintain a robust and auditable software version release process, to include problem reporting and resolution, Corrective and Preventative Action reporting.

This position allows telecommuting. The selected candidate will be required to perform some work onsite at one of the listed location options.

This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R.  § 120.15 is required.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics or other technical degree

  • 5+ years of experience in developing/analyzing/and testing code; developing in C/C++.

  • 5+ years of experience in Software lab experience, developing test script/sequences, verifying and validating product software.

  • 3+ years as a Senior code developer or in test and verification for a complex integrated system (i.e. Rocket or Missile).

  • Experience in team environment for code development and/or test development

  • Experience in providing presentations/reporting development status versus plan

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience): 

  • 5+ years of experience in software development in a Linux/Redhawk CentOS/ or VXWorks environment

  • Experience with Real Time Operating Systems (RTOS), such as Linux or VXWorks.

  • 5+ years of experience in software development in a Windows Environment.

  • Experience in Computer HW and Software (Driver/Firmware) troubleshooting platform conflicts and anomalies and driving and delivering effective resolutions.

  • Knowledgeable on Agile development and willing to become a Scrum leader or team leader in an Agile software development environment.

  • 5+ years of experience with Software repository controls and planning applications such as Subversion, GIT, PCVS VersionOne, QT, Parasoft or similar

  • Experience with anomaly reporting and resolution, Change Management, Non Conformance Reporting and Resolution.

  • Application experience with communications, 1553/422/IP communications, RTOS, Interrupt Timing and/or GPS.

  • Application experience with  Models and Simulation development, to include interfacing models with final products application software

  • SLS or other Rocket/Missile program experience

  • Experience in space industry and with equivalent products is desirable. 

  • 5+ years of experience across a breadth of disciplines including hardware, software, systems and test is desirable.

  • 5+ Years of experience with software requirements development and verification.

Typical Education/ Experience:

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, or physics (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 10 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+6 years' related work experience, Master+8 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
