Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) is seeking an Entry-Level Guidance, Navigation & Control Engineer to join the Flying Qualities and Autonomy Technology Group as part of the Vertical Lift Division located in Ridley Park, PA.  We participate in all phases of design, test, and support of Boeing’s vertical lift aircraft, including the Chinook helicopter, the V-22 Osprey tiltrotor, and others.

 

Position Responsibilities:

  • Analyze air vehicle stability and control characteristics to ensure acceptable handling qualities in compliance with specifications.

  • Apply control theory to the design of control laws that achieve desired characteristics for dynamic control response, gust or disturbance rejection, system failure robustness, and loads considerations.

  • Develop and validate linear and nonlinear mathematical analysis and simulation models of air vehicle and subsystems using theory and test data, including wind tunnel and flight test.

  • Support the design of new and modified rotorcraft configurations from a stability, control, and handling qualities perspective.

  • Perform wind tunnel, pilot-in-the-loop flight simulation, hardware in the loop laboratory, and flight testing in support of vehicle design and analysis.

  • Apply tools such as Matlab, Unix, and legacy and modern programing languages.

  • Collaborate with test pilots and with engineers in other engineering disciplines such as aerodynamics, dynamics, avionic systems, structural design, and crew station design, to optimize vehicle level characteristics.

  • Occasional travel to support flight testing at off-site locations. These test sites could include cold weather sites, high altitude sites, or ships at sea.

  • Supports the gathering of system level requirements.

  • Performs and documents analysis of Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC) systems to validate or assess the system design or models.

  • Assists troubleshooting of routing operational anomalies, functional tests and services incidents.

  • Supports execution tests, analysis and design review per FAA, MIL-SPEC and NASA guidance to deliver a compliant product.

  • Works under close supervision.

 

This position allows telecommuting. The selected candidate will be required to perform some work onsite at the listed location. The schedule is Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday in-person, at the Ridley Park office, and Mondays and Fridays working from home. A 9/80 work schedule is also available.

 

This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship. An interim and/or final U.S. Secret Clearance Post-Start is required?.

 

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering by the end of Decmember 2022

  • Ability to work flexible hours, overtime and occasional weekends when necessary to support test activities

  • Ability to travel 10% of the time

 

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Experience, activities, and coursework which demonstrates an interest some of the following: Flight Vehicle Dynamics, Stability & Control, Control Law Design, Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC), Simulation and Modeling, Aeromechanics

  • Knowledge of rotorcraft is desirable

 

Typical Education and Experience:

 

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience. In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
