The Boeing Space Launch System (SLS) team is seeking an experienced Tooling Industrial Engineer to support Tooling & Specialty Engineering at the NASA Michoud Assembly Facility (MAF) in New Orleans, LA.  The successful candidate will perform tooling analysis and manage SLS tooling readiness, ensure compliance to tooling requirements, preventive maintenance plan, metrics, and facilitate tooling process improvement.

Boeing and NASA are building the world’s largest rocket for human exploration of deep space.  The Space Launch System (SLS) provides a critical heavy-lift capability, powering people and cargo beyond our moon and into deep space to enable diverse exploration, science and security missions.  


Position Responsibilities:

  • Develops and optimizes tooling readiness plan by working with tooling engineers, IPT and operations.

  • Develops tooling cost estimates, both design and fabrication, using standard work, historical data, and/or operations analysis

  • Supports Line-Side Support teams by working with Production to track tooling performance to schedule, develop tooling recovery plans, and provide data on tooling staffing requirements

  • Applies advanced Industrial Engineering concepts, techniques, analysis, and decision tools to promote and implement changes in tooling, manufacturing, engineering and service operations.

  • Independently develops models, data bases and spreadsheets to analyze data (e.g., statistics, operations research, engineering economics), and provides summary analysis and metrics for consultation to customers (e.g., management, departments, suppliers).

  • Researches, designs, develops, improves, and implements processes to enhance tooling performance, lower cost, and improve quality, through the application of advanced Lean and other Industrial Engineering concepts for large scale systems integration and asset utilization.

  • Analyzes and designs value stream, including capability, capacity (e.g., make/buy, supplier selection, risk analysis, supplier performance), throughput, work flow and logistics (e.g., critical path, lead-time, transportation, factory layout).

This position may require up to 10% travel.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite.  The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

The position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. “US Person” includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

This position requires the ability to obtain a clearance for access to a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) facility.
 

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills & Experience): 

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry

  • 3+ years of experience in an engineering related role

  • Experience working in cross-functional teams

  • Experience working in a manufacturing and/or production environment


Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Industrial Engineering experience

  • Experience with process improvement

  • 1+ years of experience working with tooling

  • Strong analytical skills

  • 1 or more years of experience with project management and working with project scheduling tools

 
Typical Education/Experience: 

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD, Master +3 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
