The Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) organization is seeking a Mid-Level Electrical Design & Analysis Engineer, Special Test Equipment (STE) Design (Level 3) to join the Design Engineering Team in Huntsville, AL to support the Patriot Advanced Capability (PAC-3) missile-defense program.

 

The Design Engineering team is responsible for designing RADAR seeker upgrades and next generation concepts, as well as supporting production and special test equipment design. Boeing has a multi-year contract to develop, test, and manufacture the PAC-3 RADAR seeker. This program encompasses concurrent design, test and manufacturing as new upgrades to this complex electro-mechanical assembly are incorporated into production. This long-term program is rapidly growing in Huntsville, Alabama due to design updates, production growth, and Boeing facilities consolidations.

 

As a Mid-Level Electrical Design & Analysis Engineer, Special Test Equipment (STE) Design (Level 3) for the PAC-3 program, you will be responsible for testing and integrating digital and RF hardware focused on RADAR and Missile technologies.  You will be required to interpret product requirements and developing a test system based on these requirements.  Additionally, you will have hands on hardware integration and test experience and are capable of performing fault isolation and repair, being hands on in the lab environment with hardware such as commercial test equipment, custom electronics (simple to very complex), printed circuit boards (PCBs), Units, Test Sets, subsystems, and systems.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Designs special test equipment consoles, test adapters, and/or test cables for testing RADAR systems including analog, digital, RF and high-power applications

  • Develops test stations capable of testing circuit card assemblies, subsystems and system assemblies

  • Develops detailed design solutions to component/part obsolescence issues

  • Develops circuit board designs (schematics, printed wiring board layout/analysis, etc.)

  • Develops test equipment drawings and documents; maintains electronic and electrical system requirements according to customer desires and contract requirements

  • Develops of statements-of-work and technical performance specifications

  • Integrates test hardware and software

  • Programs test equipment with the National Instruments (NI) development suite (Lab Windows/CVI, LabVIEW and TestStand)

  • Develops of test and supports the execution test events

  • Leads Root Cause/Corrective Action (RCCA) investigations and resolutions

  • Executes various methods of testing and analysis to support design and production and to ensure system designs meet operational and functional requirements

  • Provides project management and leadership for test station design projects

  • Works with suppliers to ensure timely delivery of products

  • Leads formal trade studies and literature research to support future product designs

  • Ability to work well both independently and within a team environment

Work Authorization:

This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S Security Clearance for which the US Government requires US Citizenship. (An interim and/or final U.S. Secret Clearance Post-Start is required.)

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor's, Master's or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry

  • Five (5) or more years of experience in electrical engineering (or PhD or Masters +3 years related work experience) with specific experience

  • Three (3) or more years designing and integrating special test equipment (STE)

  • Three (3) or more years of experience with electronics test methodology

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree in Electrical/Computer Engineering or related science or technology field degree

  • Experience in one or more of these focused areas: analog/digital circuits, gimbal design/control, power supply and distribution, firmware/Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), LabVIEW, control systems, RF theory, Electro Magnetic Compatibility.

  • Experience with MIL-STD-810 and DO-160 test standards

  • Good and organizational skills.

  • Experience with Creo Parametric/Windchill

  • Ability to work in a team environment

  • Previous design team or special project team participation

  • Experience of Printed Wiring Board (PWB) design processes

  • Experience of a broad range of hardware types including RF assemblies, antennas, power supplies (alternating current/direct current (AC/DC)), FPGAs, digital signal processors, and embedded architectures

  • Experience of antennas, wave guides, gimbals, filters, complex electronics, RF signal processing, RF amplifiers, RF transceivers, Intermediate Frequency Processing, and/or serial rapid Input/Output (I/O) interfaces (SRIO)

  • Experience of digital and RF test equipment including signal generators, network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, and oscilloscopes

  • Detailed knowledge of Systems Engineering principles, including the engineering principles associated with test hardware and general purpose/special test equipment (STE) development

  • Proven technical leadership in a complex system engineering development environment

  • Prior technical team leadership experience

  • Technical experience working with high-speed digital and RF systems

  • Test equipment applications experience, including Phase Noise Analyzer (PNA), Spectrum Analyzer, RF Signal Generator, Power Meter, Oscilloscope, Power Supplies, etc.

  • Experience working in an engineering laboratory and transition to production environments performing STE hardware, software, & firmware integration and test activities

  • Experience in Operations and Manufacturing environments including procedure development, test, training, transition planning, installation, and deployment

  • Experience in support of generating Verification Compliance Requirements Matrices, Requirements Verification Plans, Test Plans, Test Requirements Documents, Test Procedures and Requirements Sell-off Documents

  • Knowledge of environmental test methods and practices

  • Demonstrated ability to perform test equipment troubleshooting and failure diagnosis

  • Proficient in MATLAB, C++, Python, LabVIEW, Eclipse, Lab Windows/CVI, or related programming languages

  • Problem solving, organization, coordination, and planning skills

  • Lead project technical execution and maintain performance metrics for decision making and continuous improvement purposes

  • Manage project scope (requirements and change requests) ensuring it meets agreed to commitments

  • Generate and maintain project schedules with understood dependencies, deliveries, and critical path

  • Utilize Earned Value (EV) methods for managing project budget (and schedule)

  • Ensure project meets quality expectations

  • Identify risks and opportunities and resolve them through proactive ownership

  • Prepare well-crafted presentations reporting project status to leadership teams Develop Engineering estimates and proposals for potential projects and gaining organizational buy-in

Typical Education / Experience:

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD, Master+3 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
