The Huntsville BR&T organization is seeking a Senior Materials and Processes (M&P) Technical Lead Engineer, Space Launch System (level 5) based out of Huntsville, Alabama.  This is an exciting opportunity to design the first heavy list vehicle to reach Mars on Core Stage for Space Launch System (SLS).

This position requires background in various metallic materials such as steels, aluminums, titanium, and nickel alloys, where design solutions are needed to meet requirements in flammability, hydrogen embrittlement, corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, welding, and forgings design. Additional experience or knowledge in polymers, composites, adhesives, sealants and coatings is a plus. Strong communication skills, able to coordinate with team members to accomplish tasks in a timely manner. Self- starter and willing to take on major issues and technical tasks on Core Stage production or development. Ability to develop relationship with various customers and suppliers.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Lead team in daily tasks and provide technical expertise
  • Advise on the right engineering approach and help resolve technical risks, vehicle anomalies, and issues
  • Coach, train and mentor less experienced engineers and colleagues
  • Define and deploy engineering best practices and methods
  • Generate deliverables such as M&P Control Plans, Material Usage Agreements (MUAs) and Material Identification Usage Lists (MIULs) and coordinate their review with NASA M&P
  • Disposition non-conformances and lead and/or consult on Root Cause Corrective Actions (RCCA)activities for M&P function
  • Maintain internal company material and process specifications and standards while leaning into areas for standardization, improvement, and increased collaboration with other functional stakeholders
  • Represent/Lead group in technical discussions with management and other organizations
  • Identify technical challenges and solutions, where appropriate, to program leadership
  • Coordinate with customer
  • Ensure design compliance to SLS program M&P requirements
  • Support risk and opportunity management effort
  • Review and concur with problem/issue/nonconformance resolution, Material Review Board (MRB), waivers and/or deviations and lead and/or consult on RCCA activities for the M&P function
  • Direct and advise engineers performing M&P design review and analysis and oversees engineers performing material testing programs

This position is expected to be 100% onsite.  The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “U.S. Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. “U.S. Person” includes U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.  

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry
  • 10+ years experience in engineering
  • 10+ years experience with metals and mechanical parts
  • 10+ years experience with material processing for metals (e.g., welding forging, heat treat, machining, forming), polymers and composites (e.g., autoclave curing, lay-up, co-curing, repair), sealants and finishes processing (e.g., plating, painting, surface preparation, fay surface sealing, fillet sealing), and/or ceramic (e.g., high temperature processing, machining) and electronic materials (e.g., soldering, printed circuit board cleaning, conformal coating)

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in electrical engineering
  • Experience with project leadership, particularly in the area of aerospace & defense
  • Experience with engineering alloys, particularly in aluminum, titanium, nickel and steel alloys
  • Experience with material characterization techniques and failure analysis
  • Experience with technical writing and presenting
  • Experience with statistical process control and statistical evaluation of material performance
  • Experience with metallic Additive Manufacturing technologies such as laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) printers

Typical Education/Experience: 

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 14 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+9 years' related work experience, Master+12 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
