Job Description

Boeing Commercial Airplanes is seeking a Shot Peening Operator A to join our team!

Operators in this position set up, operate and adjust shot peen equipment to form detail parts, wing skins, and webs to various contours, straighten and flatten high quality, close tolerance aircraft parts and materials. Employment in this position also requires standing, twisting and bending at the waist, walking, handling, lifting less than 10 pounds, reaching, rotation of head/neck, contact with metals, exposure to noise and atmospheric conditions, and the use of personal safety gear for face/eye, hand/arm, ears and feet. Work assigned by shop load, area lead or supervisor based on priority requirements. Review Work Order (W/O) to determine requirements of work to be performed. Ensure that the correct type and quantity of parts/material were issued and that prior operations are complete. Obtain and review appropriate drawings, Boeing (BAC) specifications and any other necessary documents to perform the job. Use on-line information systems (e.g., Bold/Web).

Position Responsibilities:

  • Obtain, set up and run Almen strip at beginning of a part run or each shift to check/verify proper intensity of peening process, as required.

  • Select part (e.g., wing skin) from over head load bar rail system, by entering number (e.g., 1, 2, 5) using key pad and move work to automated spanwise/chordal machine area.

  • Retrieve and down load numerical control (N.C.) programs to machine controller using computing equipment.

  • Select appropriate menu item (e.g., part number, process number) and initiate cycle to run automated peening operations.

  • Adjust machine setting (e.g., speeds and feeds) to correct peening problems on program and make minor adjustments, as required.

  • Monitor machine during operation for unusual vibration or sounds, watch machine gauges and displays for read out warnings.

  • Visually check machine for smooth operation.

  • Work with crane operator to load part (e.g., wing skin) onto check fixture, line up part to index points using pry bar, as required.

  •  Check part configuration to check fixture using 15lbs. shot bags, as required.

  •  Adjust improper contour/fit using manual portable shot peen blaster, per (BAC) specifications.

  • Check part key features for contour and proper dimensions using depth/taper gauge, as required.

  •  Check part for flatness on slab using straight edge and taper gauge removing bow out, using portable shot peen machine, per (BAC) specifications, as required.

  • Prepare detail parts for manual/automated compression shot peen.

  • Clean, mask and plug areas that must be protected from shot.

  •  Load detail parts into shot peen chamber/cabinet for manual compression peening, per drawing, W/O and (BAC) specifications, as required.

  • Check work after completion of each operation and/or job to ensure parts are complete per drawing, W/O and (BAC) specifications.

  •  Use precision measuring instruments necessary to verify part is within specifications, as required.

  • Handle and dispose of hazardous materials (e.g., solvents) in approved manner. Maintain personal and tool certifications, as required.


 

This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

The position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. “US Person” includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

1+ years of experience working with precision measuring tools.

1+ years working with and disposing of hazardous materials.

1+ years in NC (numerical control) maintenance.

Typical Education:

High school graduate or GED preferred.

Relocation:

This position is located in a location that does not offer relocation.  Candidates must live in the immediate area or relocate at their own expense.

Shift:

This position is for 2nd shift.
