Spectrolab, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Boeing Company, is seeking an Associate Materials Growth Process Engineer (Level 2) to join our Wafer Products Engineering group. This position is located at our manufacturing facility in Sylmar, California.

Spectrolab is the world’s leading merchant supplier of the highest-efficiency multi-junction solar cells for spacecraft power systems, with proven reliability drawn from 65 years of space heritage. Spectrolab’s state-of-the-art space solar cells and panels power satellites in Earth’s orbit, as well as, the International Space Station. Since its founding in 1956, Spectrolab has led the way in the development of high-efficiency solar cells for space missions. During the Apollo 11 mission in 1969, a Spectrolab product became the first solar panel to be placed on the moon.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite.  The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

Position Responsibilities:

Responsibilities will vary depending on skills and qualifications, and may include, but will not be limited to, the following:

  • Provide process engineering support for materials growth and characterization of MOVPE (Metal Organic Vapor Phase Epitaxy) wafers used for high efficiency solar cell devices

  • Maintain and troubleshoot MOVPE processes on a daily basis in a high volume production environment by utilizing engineering best practices, knowledge of semiconductor device physics, and safety-first mindset

  • Support diagnostic activities of MOVPE reactor equipment problems

  • Support advanced device and process development projects

  • Perform and provide support for a variety of semiconductor materials characterization such as ECV, Surfscan, HRXRD, etc., as well as a variety of semiconductor device testing such as I-V, FBIR, EL, and spectral response measurements

  • Perform and provide support for basic device fabrication to evaluate grown material quality

  • Participate in LEAN, 5S, and other manufacturing improvement initiatives

  • Interact closely with teams within the larger Operations group to achieve organizational goals

Work Authorization:

The position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. “US Person” includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office Applications.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Experience with semiconductor device physics.

  • Experience in semiconductor (III-V or Si) industry and/or solar technology with solid understanding of basic semiconductor material science and device physics.

  • Experience in statistical data analysis, process control, process capability, and/or failure mode analysis

  • Experience in implementing and monitoring statistical process controls.

  • Experience with epitaxial or other thin film deposition processes and tools

  • Experience with advanced device and process development projects

  • Experience with handling chemical sources and chemical safety monitoring systems

  • Familiarity with semiconductor processing, solar cell devices, material characterization, and analytical techniques

  • Experience or familiarity with metrology instruments such as optical/electron microscopes, XRD, spectroscopy, and basic device testing (current-voltage)

  • Familiarity or experience in programming with VBA, LabView, C/C+/C++, SQL

  • Understanding of fundamentals of chemistry, materials science, and physics

  • Quick learner; able to assess inputs from a variety of sources and provide clear and concise decisions and dispositions in a fast-paced manufacturing environment

  • Good organizational and communication skills, both oral and written

  • Ability to work well independently and as a team

  • Familiarity with semiconductor cleanroom best practices and willingness to work inside a cleanroom

  • Willing to support flexible working hours including second shift as necessary

Typical Education / Experience:

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 2 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. Master). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Relocation:

This position does not offer relocation. Candidates must live in the immediate area or relocate at their own expense.
