Boeing is recruiting a Mid-Level Aerodynamic Lab Operations Engineer to join the Aerodynamic Lab team at the company’s Tukwila, WA location. The Aerodynamic Lab is responsible for wind tunnel testing in support of airplane design, development, research, and technology development for all Boeing programs across all speed regimes.

In this position, you’ll be responsible for repair, maintenance, and upgrading the various test facilities and infrastructure that supports Aerodynamic Lab testing activities. The primary lab facilities include the Boeing Transonic Wind Tunnel (BTWT), Boeing Research Aerodynamic and Icing Tunnel (BRAIT), Low Speed Aeroacoustics Facility (LSAF), as well as a 300psi and 1,000psi air compressor. Each facility has a unique suite of equipment and infrastructure to support it.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate with focals of lab areas to address their support infrastructure needs

  • Coordinate with the Boeing Facilities and Asset Management (F&AM) group on required maintenance support and infrastructure related issues and projects

  • Support overall Aero Lab safety focal, coordinate with support organizations with regard to lab safety including responsibility for maintaining lab safety documentation and signage and monthly safety walks

  • Maintain the lab process documentation and drawings specifically related to the test facilities and infrastructure

  • Support development of the capital and expense long range business plan (LRBP) inputs related to test facilities requirements

  • Plan and coordinate maintenance activities around facility test schedules, including routine preventative maintenance, repairs, and large-scale projects

  • Maintain or manage spares inventories

  • Staff program testing in the labs as a facility operator which can, sometimes, include extended or off shift times

This position is expected to be 100% onsite.  The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship. An interim and/or final U.S. Secret Clearance Post-Start is required.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • 3+ years of experience with facility maintenance in an engineering and/or management role

  • Experience with Mechanical Engineering background with passing knowledge of aerodynamics, pipe flow, refrigeration, vibration, rotating machinery, stress analysis, design, materials, Code compliance, project management, general troubleshooting, and general plant/facility engineering

  • Experience with various kinds of piping systems, valves, compressors, pumps, motors, and hydraulics

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong organizational and analytical skills

  • Experience effectively presenting information to management

  • Experience in comprehending, analyzing and interpreting complex engineering documentation

  • Experience in solving problems involving multiple engineering fields. (Aero, mechanical, electrical, controls, air systems, hydraulics)

  • Ability to work multiple engineering roles: Primary assets are wind tunnel facilities and their respective subsystems

  • Experience with facilities and asset management

  • Enhance project management skills

  • Strong leadership skills and coaching abilities

  • Experience with financial terms and principles 

Typical Education/Experience: 

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD, Master+3 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
