Boeing is looking for a Mid-Level Metals Engineer (Level 3) based out of Auburn, Washington. This exciting position is for supporting Boeing Metals Fabrication in Auburn, Washington.  The position will primarily be in support of the Manufacturing Business Unit (MBU): Advanced Metals Structures.

The selected candidate will guide the Boeing Fabrication through developing new metals forming technology, defining our technology roadmap, selecting and implementing new equipment and devices, and resolving emergent metallurgical issues. The position will have the opportunity to interact directly with Boeing Fabrication leadership on a regular basis. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to interact regularly with a talented and diverse team of engineers from many disciplines including, but not limited to, metals engineering, chemical engineering, automation engineering, ergonomic engineering, and measurement engineering.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Support metals fabrication processes including heat treatment, metal forming, welding, assembly, and automation  
  • Support customer initiatives to identify, develop and implement material and process improvements to reduce cost, eliminate bottlenecks, improve quality and enhance safety  
  • Coordinate the involvement of BR&T technology experts as required  
  • Participate in root cause and corrective action reviews  
  • Use project management skills to support customer cost, technical and schedule requirements including development of customer-funded BR&T statement of work 

This position allows some telecommuting. The selected candidate will be required to perform some work onsite at the listed location. On-site work will be at a minimum of 3 days per week.

This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “U.S. Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. “U.S. Person” includes U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.  

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry
  • 1+ years of experience in reviewing engineering documentation including drawings, models, specifications and standards  
  • 3+ years of experience supporting metal product manufacturing including heat treat, forming, machining and surface enhancement

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or Metallurgical Engineering with an emphasis on metallurgy or manufacturing processes  
  • Experience with automation
  • Experience with managing projects and leading multi-disciplinary teams
  • Experience with methods, techniques and test procedures to characterize material properties  
  • Experience with titanium material properties as applied to metal forming and heat treating
  • Experience with lean manufacturing principles  
  • Experience with Technology Readiness Level (TRL) and Manufacturing Readiness Level (MRL)
  • Experience with CATIA design software
  • Experience with prototyping tooling, equipment, and/or assemblies
  • Experience using Finite Element Modeling software to simulate metal manufacturing processes  
  • Experience with statistical process control  
  • Experience reviewing engineering drawings, manufacturing plans, and disposition of non-conformances. 
  • Experience with material selection and producibility reviews 
  • Strong communication skills regarding oral presentations and written documentation
  • Communication skills necessary to work with shops, design teams, and provide technical support to internal and external customers, including oral presentations and written documentation

Typical Education/Experience: 

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD, Master+3 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
