The Boeing Defense, Space and Security (BDS), Ground Development and Mission Operations Division, is seeking a Lead Ground Segment Systems Engineer (Level 4) to join our team located in Colorado Springs, CO. The successful candidate will occasionally travel to other sites including Kent, WA and El Segundo, CA.  Our team creates the software tools and services for the world’s highest performing satellite/ground systems for United States Government (USG) and Commercial customers. We work with space customers in the development of the next-generation ground systems for all types of space missions including communication, precision timing and navigation, remote sensing, space control and exploration.

Position Overview:

The Lead Ground Segment Systems Engineer will be a part of a high-performing program team that is engaged in a key USG proprietary space program. The position will support Ground Segment Systems Integration, Verification, and Validation, as well as define and coordinate system performance requirements, integrate technical parameters and assure compatibility of all physical, functional and program interfaces. The position assists the Ground Segment Chief Engineer with ground architecture design by engaging with other segments of the program, such as Systems Engineering, Integration and Test (SEIT), Satellite Segment, Launch Segment, Mission Segment, and Communications Segment. The program is organized by Integrated Product Teams working together to launch a rapidly developed and integrated new satellite/ground system with resiliency, exceptional mission performance, extensibility, scalability, and flexibility.

The program use Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) for requirements definition and design.  Satellite and Ground Segment requirements and design is performed through SysML modeling, by creating Use Cases, Context Diagrams, Activity Diagrams, etc.  Boeing MBSE design standards and processes assure traceability, complete end to end system verification, day in the life system validation, configuration management and change control.  We develop and deliver first time quality systems that are operable and maintainable.  As a Ground Segment Systems Engineer, you will be working with other program Systems Engineers to develop common tools and create a library of ground segment products.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with the Ground Segment Chief Engineer to implement MBSE SysML content in CAMEO software.

  • Understand and work collaboratively with customer on their needs, goals, expectations, and sensitivities.

  • Flow down customer requirements to the System Spec and the Ground Segment Spec.

  • Assist the development of the program’s Ground Segment CONOPS, design and test plan using MBSE tools.

  • Collaborate and support Ground interface definitions with the Space Segment and SEIT program teams.

  • Define verification, validation, certification and qualification processes and procedures for ground architecture elements such as ground antennas, operations centers, launch sites, factory development and test sites, operations and support sites, cyber boundaries, and external interfaces to mission partners for tasking and dissemination.

  • Perform various analyses to optimize total system of systems and/or system architecture.

  • Derive and allocate requirements (e.g., system, sub-system, software) and show traceability throughout the product lifecycle.

  • Assess and document test or analysis data to show compliance.

  • Support definition of Interface Control Documents (ICD’s), including Space to Ground, Launch to Ground, External Mission Partners, and Terrestrial Comm to Ground.

Work Authorization:

This position requires an active/current U.S. Security Clearance with a Tier 5 Investigation (T5), formerly known as a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) that has been successfully completed by the federal government within the last 5 years or in a Continuous Evaluation/Continuous Vetting program for the T5/SSBI. (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active).

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, or physics.

  • 5 years or more of experience designing, developing, testing or operating ground/satellite systems (commercial or USG).

  • 3 years working with USG satellite or ground customer teams.

  • 1 year using Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE).

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Experience with some or all of standard satellite ground functions such as command and control, mission planning, mission data processing, orbit management, situational awareness, automation, front end processors, ground antennas, crypto equipment, and terrestrial communication network.

Typical Education/Experience:

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+4 years' related work experience, Master+7 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Relocation:

This position does not offer relocation.  Candidates must live in the immediate area or relocate at their own expense.

Travel:

Ability to travel a 3-5 days/month to El Segundo, CA, Kent, WA, or other sites is necessary.

Colorado summary pay range: Min: $99,000 – Max: $177,000
