Boeing Defense, Space and Security (BDS) is seeking a Systems Safety Engineer (Level 6) to join our team in El Segundo, California.

BDS is one of the world's largest defense, space and security businesses specializing in innovative and capabilities-driven customer solutions, and the world's largest and most versatile producer of military aircraft and commercial/civil/government space systems.

Objectives of the position include oversight and systematic reduction of hazard risks across the government and commercial satellite portfolio, including product development, assembly test and launch operations.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Identify, analyze, and mitigate potential hazards and risks associated with system designs in order to achieve enterprise and customer safety objectives while ensuring that the systems remain operationally responsive and effective

  • Perform systematic and comprehensive assessments on the system architecture, integrated design, software, support equipment, and test operations to ensure that relevant safety requirements are met

  • Ensure system safety plans, processes and procedures are properly implemented in support operations in a satellite production facility

  • Provide real-time support to critical and hazardous operations in a satellite production facility

  • Support the development of contingency plans and procedures to ensure safe operating conditions are maintained in both nominal and off-nominal situations involving space flight hardware, software, support equipment, and/or personnel interaction

  • Coordinate and collaborate across stakeholders (engineering, occupational health, technicians, quality, leadership, customers) to ensure safety is integral to all activities and operations

  • Review engineering design specifications, test operations procedures, change proposals, deficiency reports, exceptions, and/or deviation/waiver requests for potential flight/ground test safety impacts

  • Participate in incident investigations and root cause/corrective action analyses as requested

  • Support preparation of presentations, analyses, and reports for government/customer & program safety review boards, System Safety Working Groups (SSWGs), program design reviews, and test/mission readiness reviews

This position requires an active U.S. Top Secret Security Clearance for which the government requires U.S. Citizenship - pre-start (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active) A current Tier 5 (T5), formerly known as Single Scope Background Investigation completed within the last 5 years (SSBI) and special program access or other Government access requirements are mandatory for this position.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry

  • Eight (8) or more years of experience with systems safety within the aerospace and/or automotive industry.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Ten (10) or more years of experience with systems safety related to space flight hardware and launch systems

  • Experience performing a variety of hazard analyses across the full product life cycle, with emphasis on test. Examples include: Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA), Subsystem Hazard Analysis (SSHA), System Hazard Analysis (SHA), Operating and Support Hazard Analysis (O&SHA), Occupational Health Hazard Assessment (OHHA), Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA), and Software Safety Hazard Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis

  • Experience with spacecraft systems and hazardous commodities

  • Experience with safe conduct of critical lifts and/or critical moves

  • Experience with RF (radio frequency) communication systems and RF hazards

Typical Education / Experience:

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 10 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD, Master+9 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
