Job Description

At Boeing, we innovate and collaborate to make the world a better place. From the seabed to outer space, you can contribute to work that matters with a company where diversity, equity and inclusion are shared values. We’re committed to fostering an environment for every teammate that’s welcoming, respectful and inclusive, with great opportunity for professional growth. Find your future with us.

Boeing Defense Space & Security has an exciting opportunity for an Associate Mission Systems Engineer (Level 2) to join our Experimental Systems Group (ESG) located in Seal Beach, CA to support development of new first-of-kind space vehicles and missions. ESG supports a variety of government customers spanning technology domains, and is an extremely fast-paced, responsive development environment delivering new capabilities to customers rapidly and affordably. The ESG portfolio consists of a range of platforms and technologies including the X-37B, the world’s first fully autonomous reusable spaceplane, which recently launched on its sixth and most ambitious flight yet.

As a member of our Systems Engineering Integration & Test (SEIT) Mission Design team, you will join a diverse team of system architects, Concept of Operations (ConOps) developers, mission modeling and simulation specialists, fault and autonomy designers, and recommended operating procedure (ROP) authors. You will be expected to work in one or more of these disciplines, leading coordination across all internal and external stakeholders to drive your assigned programs’ development from early capabilities studies through demonstration. You will serve as a core point of contact for customers and will work directly with subject matter experts across the business to quickly iterate and converge on achievable solutions that meet our customers’ needs. Our development timelines are aggressive and you will be asked to develop solutions to previously unsolved problems.

In this role, you will work in multidisciplinary teams to bring concept of operations to fruition in support of our customers’ mission objectives. You will work both as an individual contributor and as a team lead. You will need to be able to dive into broad, minimally-defined design spaces and effectively lead integrated efforts.

  • [Architecture & ConOps] Develop inter-segment architectures for new systems and capabilities
  • [Fault & Autonomy] Ensure system design is aligned with customer risk tolerance in the presence of anomalies
  • [Fault & Autonomy] Analyze failure modes and design onboard autonomy to detect, isolate, and recover from fault scenarios
  • [Mission Analysis] Develop physics-based mission simulations to inform system trade studies and verify system performance
  • [Mission Analysis] Develop mission flight plans/concepts exploring new and novel astrodynamics approaches
  • [ROPs] Develop and maintain spacecraft recommended operating procedures
