The Boeing Test & Evaluation (BT&E) organization is seeking a Space Vehicle Test Director at the Satellite & Space Systems location in El Segundo, California. This is home of the world’s largest dedicated spacecraft factory with over 1 million square feet of integration and test facilities. 

This position offers a unique opportunity to lead fast-paced teams working complex technical challenges in support of satellite communications programs. Space Vehicle Test Directors (SVTD) will interact with other engineering disciplines, including mechanical engineering, systems engineering and specialty engineering, as well as production operations, and program management. This position requires an individual with excellent technical, communication, relationship-building skills, and system level test experience. This role will support Government and Commercial programs.

The SVTD leads the test program on a given space vehicle from the initial integration of subsystems, through all phases of system level test, and through launch site. The SVTD is expected to have constant awareness of the vehicle (vehicle configuration, schedule, test execution) during all integration and test phases. The SVTD’s primary duties are to ensure the test requirements are verified through execution of test procedures, software, and support files. The SVTD works closely with the Lead Test & Evaluation Engineer (LTEE) to ensure rigorous test phase readiness for first-pass success. Safety of personnel, space vehicle, and factory equipment are absolutely critical for the SVTD to factor into all aspects of the test program.

The SVTD supports and/or leads Readiness Reviews (Test Readiness – TRR; Internal Design – IDR; Integration Readiness - IRR) and the Post Test Reviews (PTR). The SVTD is also responsible for data review of all planned tests and Special Test Requests (STRs) performed. As a leader, the SVTD will ensure coaching, training, and mentoring of their peers and team members is part of their daily operating rhythm. 

This position is primarily 1st shift; occasional alternate or extended shifts may be required to support program needs. 

Some travel (less than 10%) may be required to space vehicle launch sites across the world. 

Position Responsibilities:

  • Plans and coordinates test execution for a space vehicle

  • Focuses on leading test planning, setup, execution, and closeout

  • Drives floor execution - floor sergeant

  • Primary focal during I&T 24/7 operations for test

  • Leads Test data review and submittal to Systems Engineering

  • Special Test Request (STR) focal

  • Leads/Delegates daily shift handoffs and coordination meetings

  • Identifies and coordinates Special Test Equipment (STE) needs 

  • Provides satellite specific information to the test teams

  • Tracks and assists with timely nonconformance resolution and closure

  • Communicates daily with program office and customers for flow of status and planning, etc

  • Develops, updates, and reports program test plans and schedules

  • Validates standard deliverables and supports trade studies

  • Identify, analyze and interpret trends or patterns in data sets

  • Research and refine data collection requirements to improve quality of data sets.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite.  The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship. An interim and/or final U.S. Secret Clearance Post-Start is required.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry

  • 2+ years of experience in leading teams and team development

  • Experience with Systems Functional Testing

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • An active U.S. Secret Security Clearance (U.S. Citizenship Required). (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active)

  • Successfully completed a Tier 5 Investigation (T5), formerly known as a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) by the federal government within the last 5 years

  • Experience performing integration and testing on satellite systems

  • Experience in RF (radio frequency) Testing with knowledge of RF fundamentals and RF test measurement techniques

  • Experience working with satellite or space-based payloads

Typical Education/Experience: 

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+4 years' related work experience, Master+7 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
