The Boeing Research and Technology (BR&T) Autonomous and Collaborative Technology team is seeking a talented, self-motivated Autonomy Software Developer (Level 3) to create future autonomy capabilities. This role will be based out of Hazelwood, Missouri.

This position will involve executing applied research projects in automated decision making, machine perception, multi-vehicle collaborative control and autonomy architectures that will enable innovative capabilities (e.g. Detect and Avoid, Contingency Management, Multi-vehicle collaborative mission management) for current and future Boeing products.  Work will include performing technology development efforts to prove the feasibility of new capabilities and can include integration and maturation up through flight testing in available indoor and outdoor UAV testbeds.  Software efforts will also include work with simulations, control stations, networking/communications systems and cloud computing to support the testing of the new capabilities.

This position involves working in a dynamic team environment on small (1-2) to medium (3-6) person projects where excellent interpersonal and communication skills are needed.  Due to the research nature of the work, project objectives and requirements are likely to evolve over the course of the project.   A small amount of domestic travel to support integration, demonstration and customer engagement will be required.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assists with the development, documentation and maintenance of architectures, requirements, algorithms, interfaces and designs for software systems

  • Develops and maintains code and integrates software components into a fully functional software system

  • Assists with test procedures and documenting test results to ensure software system requirements are met

  • Supports software project management and software supplier management functions

  • Support CRAD proposal responses to DoD (DARPA/ARFL/ONR/ARL) solicitations, etc.; support existing DoD contracts, e.g., our DARPA Assured Autonomy contract

  • Performs software research and trade studies

  • Troubleshoots software issues

  • Works under general supervision

This position allows telecommuting. The selected candidate will be required to perform some work onsite at one of the listed location options.

This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship. A final U.S. Secret Clearance Post-Start is required.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills / Experience):

  • Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics or other technical degree

  • 1+ years of experience programming with C, C++, C# and/or Python 

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills / Experience):

  • Experience in simulation environments (e.g. Gazebo) and autonomy toolset (e.g. ROS) is highly desired.

  • Experience with software development, integration and testing

  • Demonstrate the ability to deliver high quality implementation, testing and documentation results on part projects will be a key to selection

  • Experience in hardware/software integration as well as software configuration management/development tools (e.g. Git) is highly desired

  • Experience in software development in cloud computing (GCP, Azure, AWS) is desired but not required

  • Experience in decision making/classification algorithms, machine learning/artificial intelligence techniques, machine perception algorithms and/or data fusion algorithms is desired but not required

  • Experience with UAV and/or robotics testing is desired but not required

Typical Education/Experience:

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD, Master+3 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
