Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS), has an immediate need for an R&D Lead Engineer-Space Projects (Level 5), in El Segundo, CA.  The Multi-Domain Capabilities organization in Phantom Works is seeking unique engineering talent to help us develop, integrate, and demonstrate the next generation of multi-domain capabilities, command and control, communications, datalinks and networking – all in support of our warfighting community.  Our team is looking to rapidly expand our baseline capabilities to support new and existing contracts and our expansion of next generation research and development efforts.  We have immediate openings, entry level and experienced technical staff, for a wide range of engineering and program management talent and are excited to discuss our opportunities with you.

The R&D Lead Engineer for Space Projects should have the following:

  • Experience with prototype and development based programs with hardware and software elements for comms, datalinks and networks for space systems

  • Demonstrated technical leadership for a rapid prototype and/or development programs

  • Experience with hardware design and development and integration, including packaging for communications, networking, datalink systems and subsystems for space systems.

  • Understanding of and experience with software and hardware integration and check-out processes and techniques

  • Work across teams (and with customers) to design and develop unique hardware solutions to solve MDC problems

  • Must have proven ability to work independently or with teams made up of various cross functional areas

  • Experience with rapid prototyping design and development for hardware solutions

  • Must have proven ability to work independently or with teams made up of various cross functional areas.

  • Understanding and experience with software and hardware integration and check-out processes and techniques

  • Experience with rapid prototyping design and development for software solutions.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite.  The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at the listed location.

Positions Responsibilities:

  • Leads work with customers to develop and document electronic and electrical system requirements on complex multi-tiered projects.

  • Leads analysis and translation of complex requirements into system architecture, hardware and software designs and interface specifications.

  • Leads testing and validation work on complex system designs to assure that operational and functional requirements are met.

  • Works with other to develop program test strategies.

  • Manages performance of critical suppliers to ensure system integration and compliance with requirements.

  • Conducts program independent reviews and reports results to program leadership.

  • Provides critical support of fielded hardware and software over the entire product lifecycle.

  • Leads research into technology advances for potential application to company business needs.

  • Makes recommendations for technology investments.

  • Recognized as a business unit-wide expert in process development and qualification, physical and functional integration and installation design and resolving supplier technical issues.

This position requires an active U.S. Top Secret Security Clearance (U.S. Citizenship Required). (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active).  A final U.S. top secret clearance Pre Start is required.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS Electrical, Mechanical or Computer Engineering (Master’s degree a plus).

  • Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineer, Computer Engineering, Mathematics or Physics.

  • 18+ years of direct experience in prototype or medium to large scale program definition, design, development, integration, testing, and capability demonstrations for space systems.

  • Experience with design, development and integration of networking, communications and datalink capabilities and subsystems for space systems.

  • Demonstrated experience leading a team of hardware and software engineers through design and develop of prototype or development type space programs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience collecting complex engineering data from multiple sources and the ability to organize and communicate data concisely to the customer and company senior leadership.

  • Demonstrated proficiency and understanding of anti-tamper cyber security technologies, methodologies, and cryptography with applications to space systems.

  • 25% travel required. 

  • The personal flexibility and willingness to travel to customer and supplier sites as well as various testing locations during the program.

Typical Education/Experience:

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 14 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+9 years' related work experience, Master+12 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
