This position is part of the EO/IR Mission Systems team within BR&T. The focus of this team is to design cutting edge sensor systems, and the key technologies that enable those systems, to support both Boeing and its external customers. Systems range from airborne EO/IR systems to space payloads. The team is focused on providing complete solutions, including systems engineering, optics design, mechanical design, algorithms, software development, firmware development, electronics, and advanced system modeling and simulations. As part of BR&T, the primary focus is on prototype systems and demonstrations, so we’re looking for people who like to try new things, and aren’t afraid of a challenge!

We are seeking mechanical engineers in Huntington Beach, CA with experience in the development of mission systems for space and airborne platforms to help lead our mechanical engineering design team for optical sensing systems. Responsibilities will include leading a team of engineers in the design of opto-mechanical systems, sub-systems, and components, including telescope housings, optical mounts, sun shades, mechanisms, and electronics. The team is responsible for all aspects of design from proof of concept through delivery, including conceptual design, CAD modeling, structural analysis, and thermal analysis, as well as assembly, integration, and test of the hardware in our electronics and optics labs. Candidates should have both the ability to lead a team as well as extensive experience in doing the engineering work.

Position Responsibilities:            

  • Lead the mechanical design team in the design of complex opto-mechanical and electromechanical systems and components for space and airborne sensor systems
  • Preform analysis for systems, sub-systems, and components, including structural, thermal, vibration, and shock.
  • Support on-site assembly, integration, and test of opto-mechanical systems and sub-systems
  • Supports proposal preparation and new business development efforts.
  • Plans and leads research projects to develop concepts for future product designs to meet future sensor needs for Boeing and it’s customers

This position allows telecommuting. The selected candidate will be required to perform some work onsite at one of the listed location options.

This position requires an active U.S. Secret Security Clearance (U.S. Citizenship Required). (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active)

Basic Qualifications (Required Skill/Experience):  

  • Bachelor's, Master's or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry
  • Experience working on opto-mechanical and/or electromechanical designs 
  • 3+ years of experience with the design of mission systems, sensors, or sensing systems
  • 15+ years of engineering experience
  • Experience with space and/or airborne systems

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience): 

  • Active Top Secret security clearance
  • Experience with thermal analysis of space systems, airborne systems, or electronics systems
  • Experience in the design and development of EO/IR sensor systems
  • Experience working on research and development or prototype programs

Typical Education/Experience:  Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 20 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+15 years' related work experience, Master+18 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
