Boeing Defense, Space and Security (BDS) is currently hiring a Senior Handling Qualities, Guidance & Controls Engineer in Mesa, AZ.

Boeing Defense, Space, & Security (BDS) is seeking a Rotorcraft Handling Qualities engineer to join the Flight Technology Group as part of the Vertical Lift Division located in Mesa, Arizona. We participate in all phases of the design, test, and support of the Apache Helicopter, Chinook helicopter, V-22 Osprey tiltrotor, and developmental aircraft. This position requires familiarity with helicopter operations and computer simulation/modeling experience in order to analyze air vehicle stability and control characteristics to ensure acceptable handling qualities in compliance with specifications.

Responsibilities include:

  • Analyzing air vehicle stability, flight control system design and performance characteristics to ensure acceptable handling qualities in compliance with specifications.

  • Developing test plans, flight test support, and documenting/delivering test results.

  • Developing and validating physics-based linear and non-linear flight simulation models that include mathematical models of various rotorcraft components (main rotor, tail rotor, fuselage) and participation in wind-tunnel/flight testing to support model validation.

  • Supporting the design of new and modified rotorcraft configurations from a stability, control, and handling qualities perspective.

  • Interfacing with program personnel to support customer questions and developing analysis to respond to competitive bid proposals.

  • Ability to use tools such as Matlab/Simulink, Mathematica, and experience with mixed language (C, C++, FORTRAN) programming,

  • Collaborate with test pilots and with engineers in other disciplines such as flight controls, aerodynamics, dynamics, avionics systems, and structural design to optimize vehicle characteristics.

  • Supports training/mentoring other team members.

  • Approximately 10% travel is required for testing at off-site locations.

This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship. A final U.S. Confidential Clearance Post-Start is required.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor's  degree or higher in Engineering

  • 9+ years experience with Matlab/Simulink, C, C++, FORTRAN programming

  • 9+ years experience with FLIGHTLAB, RCAS, or any of the Major Rotorcraft Simulation Tools in the US Rotorcraft Industry (BEFLYRT, GENHEL, COPTER, BHSIM, Generic TiltRotor [GTR], VERTISIM) or equivalent

  • 5+ years experience with building rotorcraft dynamic models and matching rotorcraft models to flight test data

  • 5+ years experience with system identification (CIFER, etc)

  • 9+ years of experience/education in rotorcraft stability and control

  • Experience supporting rotorcraft flight test 

  • Experience using all the following Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)

  • Team/project leadership experience

  • Excellent communication skills and enjoys teaching others

  • Must hold or be able to obtain a security clearance

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • PhD degree in engineering field (mechanical, software, aerospace) or Master’s Degree with focus on Rotorcraft Modeling and Simulation

  • Understanding of digital control systems

  • Experience on multiple rotorcraft and fixed wing platforms

  • Private Pilot (Rotorcraft or Airplane Single Engine Land)

Typical Education & Experience: 

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+4, Master+7 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
