Boeing Defense, Space, & Security (BDS) is seeking an Experienced Thermal and Aerodynamics Engineer (Level 3) to join the Vertical Lift Flight Technology Team located in sunny Mesa, Arizona. We participate in all phases of the design, test, and support of the Apache, Chinook, V-22 Osprey, and innovative developmental aircraft. This position performs aerodynamic/aerothermodynamics design and analysis of flight vehicles to ensure that the vehicle meets thermal requirements.

Position Responsibilities:

Leads, plans and performs aerodynamic/aero thermodynamic design and analysis of flight vehicles to ensure that the vehicle meets requirements. Leads the development of new and improving existing technologies, tools and processes to enhance technology readiness, improve vehicle performance, and reduce cycle time and cost. Plans, conducts, coordinates and/or develops test requirements and evaluates test results to ensure compliance with requirements. Develops Boeing responses to proposed regulations that impact cost, performance, producibility, maintainability and safety. Works under minimal direction. Specific work tasks include:

  • Leads the design and analysis of flight vehicles to ensure that aerodynamic and thermodynamic requirements are met.

  • Leads the development of new and improving existing technologies, tools and processes to enhance technology readiness, improve vehicle performance and reduce cycle time and cost.

  • Performs fluid, thermal, and heat transfer analyses for aerospace applications.

  • Develops flight test and instrumentation plans, supports ground and flight testing, reduce and analyze test data, and prepare test reports.

  • Works closely with design engineering teams for the development of new/improved hardware components and to resolve design and fielding issues.

  • Supports compliance activities with regulatory authorities and internal and external customers.

  • Supports in the evaluation of analyses and test results to determine that compliance requirements are met.

  • Assists in training less experienced personnel.

This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship. (An interim and/or final U.S. Secret Clearance Post-Start is required.)

This position allows telecommuting. The selected candidate will be required to perform some work onsite at one of the listed location options.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor’s degree+5 years related experience or Master’s degree+3 years related work experience or PhD.

  • 3+ years of experience + education working with principles of heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and thermodynamics.

  • Experience with MATLAB and Excel or other data manipulation tools.

  • Familiarity with Thermal Desktop or thermal/fluid system tools.

  • Familiarity with CFD software tools (especially ANSYS Fluent).

  • Excellent documentation and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Knowledge of Rotorcraft is desired.

  • Familiarity with developing heat transfer coefficients over bodies and internal flow pressure drop analyses.

  • Experience with ANSYS Fluent for structural and internal flow pressure loss analysis.

  • Experience at an Aerospace company or Government Lab is desired.

Typical Education/Experience:
Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (Master +3 years' experience or PhD). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
