Business Unit

In this internship position, the intern will work with our Technology & Engineering Unit. This unit is comprised of the global engineering function, several focused centers of expertise, and our advanced Research & Development lab – the Research Center. By combining a passion for science with precision engineering, we create smart, sustainable solutions that prove we can do the big things the right way. 

The Additive Manufacturing Process and Capability Center (AMPCC) encompasses a critical mass of Additive Manufacturing process and industrialization experts, the necessary equipment, and develops the strategic collaborations needed to rapidly mature the technology and manufacturing readiness of the critical technologies. The aim of the Center is to accelerate the development and deployment of additive manufactured products and systems for our business units. 

Job Description   

The Summer 2022 Process Intern will be responsible for one or more of the following activities: 

  • Investigating the effects of machine parameters on build quality and properties of fabricated parts 
  • Developing post fabrication powder removal techniques 
  • Characterizing fabricated parts to understand defects and surface finishes 
  • Supporting the commissioning and verification of new equipment 
  • Designing and utilizing custom fixtures for machine characterization equipment 
  • Developing mathematical models and visual representations of experimental data 
  • Working with advanced in-situ process monitoring techniques 

Qualifications & Competencies 

The preferred candidate should have a wide understanding of engineering principles and hands on experience working with laboratory equipment.  The candidate must be able to work effectively in a multidisciplinary, collaborative team environment focused on innovation and possess a variety of skills including: 

  • Presentation, planning, problem solving, organizational, project management and decision-making skills 
  • Advanced mathematics and data analysis skills with a basic understanding of statistics 
  • Experience with Additive Manufacturing concepts or equipment 
  • Scripting experience with Matlab, Python, VBA, JavaScript or similar is highly desirable 
  • CAD experience a plus 

Education & Experience 

Preference will be given to candidates currently enrolled in a Master's degree or Ph.D. degree program or those who have completed their Bachelor's degree AND have been accepted into a graduate program in the field of Mechanical, Manufacturing, Chemical Engineering or related technical field.  A minimum 3.5 GPA is required. 

Work Authorization 

  • US permanent residency (Green card) or US-citizenship is required.
