About This Position:

Do you have a passion for innovation focused on product application coupled with technical depth in thermodynamic system optimization and heat transfer analysis? If so, the Raytheon Technologies Research Center’s Heat Transfer team needs your skills. Our Senior Research Engineer position demands strong engineering fundamentals, expertise in analytical and numerical physics-based modeling, the ability to select appropriate modeling fidelity for a given problem, and experimental validation experience.

The Senior Research Engineer position may contribute to the following areas:

  • reduced order and high-fidelity multi-scale single- and two-phase flow thermal-fluid modeling in a range of applications including power electronics, electric machines, gas turbine engines, aircraft systems, avionics, missile systems, and ground-based sensor systems
  • development of innovative thermodynamic system component models and designs
  • experimental validation and demonstration of thermal components
  • development of techniques for multiphysics topology optimization, and execution of topology optimization studies
  • advanced radiation heat transfer modeling and manipulation via surface coatings and thermal metamaterial structures
  • modeling and analysis of new and novel thermodynamic systems for power generation, waste heat recovery, and cooling
  • development and execution of capability to explore large system design spaces across aerospace and defense system domains

Basic Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree or Ph.D. in Mechanical/Aerospace/Chemical/Nuclear Engineering, Physics, or similar is required
  • We will consider Ph.D. candidates with no formal experience. M.S. candidates must have 1+ year of experience in a relevant work environment
  • U.S. Citizen or U.S. Person status (Green Card) required
  • Analytic modeling and computer programming skills in common computer languages
  • General understanding of FEA and CFD modeling
  • Demonstrated experience in publishing and presenting research

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Adaptability to a range of vastly different heat transfer challenges and the ability to thrive in a collaborative environment
  • Excellent communication skills, informal and formal presentation skills, and ability to foster positive relationships with internal and external partners
  • Ability to manage uncertain requirements, formulate a problem from ill-defined needs, develop approaches to solve problems, and recognize when additional subject matter expertise is needed
  • Experience developing externally funded programs with relevance to a particular research agenda
